| Vines were introduced in our country by Ancient Romans. And they were developed during Early Christian Period. Their expansion can be proved with a single example: as early as 937, there is mention of the San Andrés monastery vineyards
The Designation of Origin was granted by the Ministry of Agriculture on July 21, 1982.
Planting density is between a maximum of 4000 vines per hectare and a minimum of 2000 vines per hectare.
Vineyard surface is very extensive, covering different landscapes and climates.
Mostly continental climate with very cold winters and long frost periods. Rainfall is about 500 mm per year.
Grape varieties authorized by the Regulatory Council are Tinta del País (Tempranillo), Cabernet Sauvignon, Garnacha Tinta, Malbec, Merlot and Albillo.
Wine regulated by this Designation include red and rosé, with a minimum content of 11.5º and 11º each.
Wine aging for wines under the Designation of Origin Ribera del Duero is carried out in registered wineries. Wine aged in registered wineries can be classified as “crianza”, “reserva” and “gran reserva” by the Designation of Origin. For wines labeled as crianza, this aging period will not take less than 2 years, starting from December 1 on the harvesting year. Red wines have to spend at least one of these two years in oak barrels, with an approximate capacity of 225 litres. Rosé wines minimum aging period in oak casks is six months.
